Abstract

Sefer ha-Maslul ('Book of the Path'), known in Arabic as Kitāb al-Tawṭiya, is a Hebrew grammar book in the Samaritan tradition composed in the first half of the twelfth century — the earliest and only known surviving Samaritan grammatical work. The term ʿiwaḍ ('compensation') is central to it; the article examines the outlook of its author, the grammarian Abū Isḥāq b. Mārūṯ, and the term and its usages in comparison with the works of rabbinic and Arab grammarians. Published in Intellectual History of the Islamicate World, vol. 8 (2020), pp. 237-254.
