A Linguistic Issue in Kitāb Šarḥ Im Beḥuqotai by Nafīs al-Dīn Abū l-Faraj Ibn al-Kaṯār (13th century)

Abstract

The treatise by Nafīs al-Dīn Abū l-Faraj Ibn al-Kaṯār (Shams al-Ḥukamāʾ, late 13th century), written in Middle Arabic in Arabic script with Hebrew portions in Samaritan letters, addresses linguistic topics in phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. The article focuses on two interrelated phonological and morphological issues: the first on the conjugation of irregular verbs, centering on the concept of ʿiwaḍ (compensation), and the second on I/y verbs and, incidentally, I/n verbs, with connections to the grammatical theories of the Samaritan grammarian Ibn Mārūṭ and the rabbinic grammarian Yehuda Ḥayyūj. The work survives in several Samaritan manuscripts in Israeli and international libraries.
